Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To

This applies across CertainTeed’s full residential line: Landmark, Landmark Pro, Landmark Premium, NorthGate, and the older Independence and Presidential lines still common in Coral Gables and Pinecrest homes from the 1990s. The underlayment itself isn’t always branded on the roll after installation, but we can identify it by weight, fastening pattern, and the tar line spacing left on the deck when we peel it back.

CertainTeed’s DiamondDeck is a synthetic, typically 48 inches wide and rated for six months of UV exposure if left exposed. WinterGuard is the self-adhering ice-and-water shield, 36 inches wide, with a split-back release film that’s easy to spot. If your roof was installed between 2008 and 2016, there’s a decent chance you’ve got DiamondDeck original formula, which was slightly thinner than the current spec and more prone to tearing during high-wind events.

We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with CertainTeed, but we are an authorized installer and we carry OEM-equivalent synthetics that meet or exceed CertainTeed’s published specs. For deck repair, we use 5/8-inch CDX plywood minimum, pressure-treated, which is what Miami-Dade code requires and what holds up when the humidity stays above 80 percent for six months straight.

Signs Your CertainTeed Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing

• Water stains on interior ceilings after rain. This usually means the underlayment has torn at a valley or penetration, or the deck plywood has delaminated and is letting water migrate sideways. In Miami, we see this most often where the original installer used felt instead of synthetic and the attic heat baked it brittle.
• Shingles lifting or curling at the edges. When deck plywood loses structural integrity, it can’t hold fasteners properly. The nails back out, the shingles lose their seal, and the wind does the rest. We’ve pulled up sections in Coconut Grove where the plywood was punky enough to push a screwdriver through by hand.
• Sagging between rafters visible from the attic. This is deck failure, plain and simple. The plywood has absorbed moisture over time, the glue has failed, and the panel is deflecting. It will not get better, and every day it sags it stresses the shingles above it.
• Mold or mildew smell in the attic during humid months. Failed underlayment lets moisture into the deck, and Miami’s humidity does the rest. If you smell it, there’s active moisture somewhere, even if the ceiling hasn’t stained yet.
• Granules collecting in gutters with no obvious shingle damage. Sometimes the deck flexes enough to break the shingle-to-shingle bond without visible curling. The granules shed from the stress, and the underlayment underneath is the only thing keeping water out until it isn’t.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

The range depends on three things: how much material we need to remove and dispose of, whether the existing shingles can be salvaged and reinstalled, and how many layers of old underlayment are stacked up there. Some Miami roofs from the 1980s have two or even three layers of felt under the shingles, and that all has to come off clean before new material goes down.
